Types of Recognized Relationships

• Spouse: Legally married to the sponsor
• Common-law partner: Lived together continuously for at least 12 months
• Conjugal partner: A committed relationship for at least 12 months but unable to live together due to extenuating circumstances (e.g., immigration restrictions)

Who Can Be a Sponsor?

You may sponsor your spouse or partner if you:

• Are at least 18 years old
• Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Reside in Canada (or plan to when the sponsored person arrives)
• Are not receiving social assistance (other than for disability)
• Can prove you can support your spouse or partner financially

Inland vs. Outland Applications

• Inland Sponsorship: Spouse is already in Canada (may be eligible for an open work permit)
• Outland Sponsorship: Spouse is outside Canada; processing is done through visa office abroad

Processing Times & Fees

Estimated processing time: Approximately 12 months

Government Fees:

• Sponsorship fee: CAD $75
• Principal applicant processing fee: CAD $490
• Right of permanent residence fee: CAD $515
• Biometrics (if applicable): CAD $85

Documents Required

• Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, photos, communication records)
• Identification and status documents (passports, PR card, etc.)
• Police certificates and medical exams
• Completed application forms (IMM series)
